As if things were not bad enough for western Canadians whose homes were damaged after flooding, some insurance companies are refusing their claims. And some of those home owners live right next door to people whose claims were accepted.
Residents in Calgary are naming and shaming insurance companies which refuse to pay for damage from sewer backup on the grounds that it is not covered when the backup is caused by flooding. Some have posted signs on their lawns.
Those home owners who damages are not covered can apply to the provincial government for disaster recovery money to make some household repairs and to replace some essential items. But there are restrictions on what people can claim and compensation is much less than what an insurance company might pay.
