Double amputee, Steve Simonar was ticketed by police for not wearing a seatbelt but a court threw out the case.
Simonar lost both arms in a boating accident almost 30 years ago and drives a specially adapted truck, using his feet to steer. He cannot use a seat belt without assistance.
Simonar had a note from a doctor explaining the situation but was unaware that he needed an official medical exemption from the licensing agency in his western province of Saskatchewan.
Police pulled him over during a massive traffic blitz earlier this year and fined him $175 for not wearing a seatbelt. When the case got to court the Crown prosecutor withdrew the ticket.
“The best, I think, is yet to come or I hope it is,” Simonar said. “I’m still expecting some kind of an apology from the officer if not Saskatoon city. We’ll see what comes out of that.”
