Fracking plan near World Heritage site divisive

The search for oil in Canada’s eastern most province of Newfoundland and Labrador has divided people living near Gros Morne National Park.

UNESCO recently announced it was concerned about plans to use hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, close to the World Heritage site. The park is known for its dark orange mountain range formed from the Earth’s mantle millions of years ago.

Some residents are appalled at the idea that fracking equipment could spoil the world renowned views. Others hope that shale gas exploration could provide much needed jobs.

The oil exploration is subject to two environmental reviews, but the former environment commissioner has warned there is a lack of regulations specific to fracking.
