Kamloopa: The largest Pow Wow in western Canada

Kamloops, British Columbia is site of the Kamloopa Pow Wow.  Just minutes from the city centre, along the South Thompson River, nearly 20,000 people will gather this weekend.

It is one of the largest celebrations of First Nations’ culture and heritage in western Canada. The Pow Wow is a festive expression of the Secwepemc people’s heritage and a vibrant display of storytelling, song, and dance in traditional regalia.

Some of the dance styles featured are the ‘Fancy Shawl Dance’ which mimics the movements of a butterfly, the men and boys traditional dance based on the stories of the hunter or warrior, and the Girls Jingle Dress category, which is a healing dance that came through a vision of the Ojibway people.
