Lac-Mégantic disaster railway gets bankruptcy protection

A Canadian judge has reluctantly granted creditor protection to the rail company whose runaway train caused the explosion and deaths of 47 people in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec last month.

Montreal, Maine & Atlantic filed for bankruptcy in both Canada and the United States citing debts to more than 200 creditors following the disaster.

The cleanup costs alone will surpass $200 million. The company says in its court documents it has just under $18 million in assets.

Taxpayers are wondering if they will get stuck with the tab.
