The Canadian firm which pioneered the smartphones and email pagers is up for sale. BlackBerry launched a new smartphone with a new operating system in January hoping to regain consumers who had defected to the iPhone but it failed to meet expectations.
BlackBerry’s directors say they are looking at “strategic alternatives” meaning the firm could be sold or go private. The Canadian government would vet any foreign takeover of a domestic company.
BlackBerry was once a stock market darling, and a keystone of Canada’s technology sector providing high tech jobs in the central province of Ontario.
