A police officer has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 18 year-old Sammy Yatim last month. A video captured by a bystander shows Yatim alone on a streetcar with several police outside before nine shots ring out. Witnesses said the teenager was wielding a small knife.
The video was posted on line and was widely viewed in Toronto and the rest of Canada. It prompted a public outcry and a protest march.
Constable James Forcillo has been suspended from duty during the investigation and now will be sent to trial.
