Doughnut contest makes the news

You know it’s the doldrums of summer in the news business when the headlines feature a contest to devise the most interesting and appealing doughnut. That or we are a nation of (dough-)nutters and no wonder we have an obesity problem.

Actor Jason Priestley who played in the TV show “Beverly Hills 90210” was one on a panel of judges, and a chef from the beloved coffee and doughnut chain, Tim Hortons turned the contestants’ ideas into actual doughnuts.

The winner was The Tortoise Torte which had a vanilla base and included chocolate, caramel and pecan. It beat out 63,000 other entries. For dreaming it up, Andrew Shepherd was awarded $10,000. With the money he says he will have a party with lots of doughnuts and he wants to take his wife to Switzerland.

Tim Hortons has said it would use the winning doughnut as inspiration for a new menu item.

“I’d be able to go into any store anywhere and see something I created,” said Shepherd, adding that he chose to enter the contest as a creative outlet and not just because of a possible windfall.

“It was a fun thing to do,” he said.  “I do think Canadians are pretty fond of their doughnuts.”
