Government and opposition MPs commit towards work on spending transparency

Some Canadian Members of Parliament of a Commons committee met Sunday and publicly pledged to continue committee work on spending transparency by parliamentarians once the House of Commons returns.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper had announced last month he wanted to prorogue parliament and start a new session in October, rather than returning on the planned end of the summer break on September 16.

There was concern that with prorogation, the work of the Commons Procedure and House Affairs Committee on spending issues would also stop.

The unusual meeting was the result of a request by the Official Opposition NDP. Initially scheduled as an in-camera session, the committee held its hour-long deliberations publicly, and unanimously agreed on continuing its work once Parliament resumed.
