Canadian officials swarmed over the site where a double-decker bus crashed into a train killing six people on Wednesday morning in a suburb of the capital, Ottawa. Authorities are combing the area for clues as to what happened. They have recovered the black boxes which recorded data on the train and the bus at the time of the accident. There will be an extensive investigation.
Witnesses on board the bus say they could see the train approaching and they screamed at the driver to stop. They felt he braked, but only belatedly.

“Something had to go wrong”
On impact the front of the bus was sheared off and several people were thrown out onto the ground. Driver Dave Woodard was among the dead. More than 30 people were injured.
Woodard’s widow has gone public asking people to stop criticizing her husband. Terry Woodard said “Something had to go wrong because he’s an amazing driver,” she said. “He’s a very careful driver. He would never put anybody in jeopardy.” She added he was healthy and loved his job.
“I lost my prince,” she said breaking down in an interview.
There is already much talk about the safety of level railway crossings and how to improve it.
