Barbie joins the Mounties

Canada’s national police force, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, are typically known more simply as “the Mounties”   Now they have a new member, well, sort of.

Mattel Corporation, which makes the world famous Barbie doll, after approaching the RCMP Foundation which regulates the image, has now released a Barbie in the iconic, red-serge dress uniform of the force.

It’s part of a limited edition “Dolls of the World” Barbie collection that places the doll in clothing that symbolizes different countries.

The description of the RCMP Barbie on the Mountie Shop website describes her outfit:

“Her scarlet tunic is accented with the cross strap and belt, navy and yellow breeches and tall Strathcona boots,” it reads. “Her Stetson can be removed to reveal her bright red hair. RCMP Barbie comes in keepsake travel trunk packaging and includes a pink passport for the perfect way for Barbie to travel across Canada, and the world, in style!”

The uniform is fairly accurate, although the heels on the boots are what would be described as “non-issue”, and her flowing hair would have to be tied tightly in a bun while in uniform.  Also missing seem to be the black epaulettes of the uniform

Also of interest is that she has no pistol/holster or ammunition pouch on the Sam Browne belt, which is a normally seen with the dress uniform.

Although the Sam Browne is normally worn over the right shoulder, the Mounties wear it over the left shoulder.

A search of the internet shows that there was another Mountie Barbie issued in 1988, but with incorrect black boots, but with the black epaulettes, and with an ammo pouch on the Sam Browne.

Critics of Barbie have pointed out that if scaled up to human proportions, she would have an impossible waist of 18 inches, anorexic arms and legs, a gireffe-like extra long and extra thin neck, which would have to support a big head.

Artist Nickolay Lamm made a “realistic” Barbie to compare

Others say, it’s just a toy

The new RCMP Barbie sells for about $30 Canadian.
