Canada’s information commissioner has admonished government officials for dubious new tactics to thwart the freedom of information law. The law, established in 1983 allows citizens to apply to get information from government files. The commissioner is there to help citizens and organizations who feel their right under this law has not been respected.
“I am seeing signs of a system in crisis, where departments are unable to fulfil even their most basic obligations under the act,” Commissioner Suzanne Legault told dozens of bureaucrats in a closed door session. She cited a series of novel measures she says are damaging an already tottering system.
