Big Brothers Big Sisters celebrate Canadian centennial

Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada is marking an amazing milestone this year, with the centennial celebrations of the organization that has been helping children for generations now.

The idea is simple; pair a young girl or boy who is challenged in school or at home, with a caring adult who has some time to share each week.  The relationship grows and the effect can be profound and rewarding.

September was a month dedicated to events celebrating the children and their mentors across Canada, including the night Niagara Falls was illuminated in purple, the banner colour of Big Brothers Big Sisters.  The Montreal Symphony Orchestra held “The Big Concert” this past Sunday afternoon.  It was a private event with a program specifically for young people, sponsored by Standard Life in Montreal.

Carmel Kilkenny spoke with Bruce MacDonald, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada, to find out more about the history and the ongoing celebrations of the organization this year.
