My guest is Michael Ignatieff, former leader of the federal Liberal Party, and leader of the official opposition in the Canadian parliament from 2008 to 2011.

As a former academic in some of the best known universities in the world often teaching politics, his transition from theory to the actual day to day arena of politics, was not an easy one.

“I died my fair share of deaths until I learned to unlearn everything I had known up to that point [of entering politics],” he writes.

“I had to unlearn being clever, being rhetorical, being fluent, and start appreciating how much depends on making a connection, any connection, with the people listening to you.”
