Spotlight on PM as ruling Conservatives prepare for his speech at convention

Listen

The future of Canada’s ruling Conservative Party could be at stake as thousands of party members meet for a convention in the western city of Calgary.

The party led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been under relentless attack since last month over the so-called Senate spending scandal. Three former government senators have been accused of spending misuses, and after supporting them earlier this year, the Prime Minister is calling for them to be suspended from the Senate.

The Prime Minister’s own reputation is under attack for his statements about what he knew about a personal cheque of $90,000 made by his Chief of Staff Nigel Wright this past May to one of the former government senators, Senator Mike Duffy.

At first the Prime Minister had said he had confidence in his Chief of Staff. Then when Wright resigned, he said he regretted his resignation. And he insisted he knew nothing of Wright’s cheque. As controversy continued, he said Wright should not have made the cheque, and that if he (the Prime Minister) had known about it, he would have stopped it.

The increasing contradictions of what was said and done over the last few weeks (and last few months), has put the Prime Minister in the spotlight as he prepares to address the Conservative Party convention Friday night (November 1).
