Canada’s Atlantic coast province of Newfoundland and Labrador on Monday (November 4) announced a moratorium on fracking near the Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The possibility of a fracking project near the park has raised concerns about the impact on this important tourism destination. UNESCO’s chief for North American sites, Guy Debonnet has said “Very clearly this is an issue of concern to us.”
In announcing the moratorium, the province’s Natural Resources Minister Derrick Dalley said the government wanted to take time to evaluate the impact of any hydraulic fracturing project on people and the environment.
RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda has a report.
