Canadian minister vows to meet emissions target

Canada is not on track to meet its target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 according to a report for the UN, but in spite of that, its environment minister says it is still committed to meeting the target. Leona Aglukkaq is in Poland to attend the second week of the UN Climate Summit.

Aglukkaq insists Canada will soon introduce rules to curb emissions in the oil and gas industry. The government had promised to introduce those regulations by last July. She adds that Canada is achieving “results” with a sector-by-sector approach.

Canada’s own environment department says emissions in 2020 will be 20 per cent higher than what the prime minister promised in 2009 at the Copenhagen summit, unless there is new action to curb them.

The opposition New Democrat Party says the Canadian government has lost all credibility when it comes to climate change.
