WTA’s Newcomer of the Year, Eugenie Bouchard, reflects

Eugenie Bouchard raced 100 spots up the women’s tennis rankings this year, becoming the WTA Newcomer of the Year.  She is the first Canadian to win the award since Carling Bassett in 1983.

Bouchard said it was an honour to win the award, but in a conference call yesterday, from her training base in Florida, in the United States, Bouchard told CBC Sports that the highlight of this year, was being at the 40-Love Party at Wimbledon.

The occasion celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Women’s Tennis Association and 17 of the former top-ranked female players were there, including Serena Williams and Chris Evert.  Bouchard said, “Moments like that are really special to me, and obviously I was just happy to be invited there.”

The 19 year-old from Montreal, is ranked No. 32 in the world, and top among teenagers and Canadians.
