Complaining of bullying by management, between 200 and 300 workers at Halifax Shipyard Limited walked off the job Thursday morning (November 28) in Canada’s Atlantic port city of Halifax.
Upset by the death of a co-worker, protesters said the worker had about 30 years of experience at the company and was recently suspended for complaining about scaffolding safety.
Our national public broadcaster CBC reports the worker killed himself on Wednesday.
“We’re heartbroken… the boys are not going to put up with it anymore. This is absolutely intolerable,” Bob Couture, a pipe fitter, told the CBC. “We’ll never forget our brother.”
Flags at the yard are flying at half-mast, and the workers held a minute of silence for their co-worker, and walked off the job..

Global News TV reported the company said it had no comment regarding the situation.
The shipyard is undergoing modernization work to allow for the building of more ships. Workers say they’re upset by an increase of disciplinary measures by management.
