Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper was joined by three former prime ministers as he arrived on a Government of Canada plane in South Africa Monday (December 9) for the Nelson Mandela memorial.
Former prime ministers Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell and Jean Chretien are part of the delegation, as well as two former Governor Generals Adrienne Clarkson and Michaelle Jean.
The premiers of the two provinces Alberta and Nova Scotia, Alison Redford and Stephen McNeil, as well as Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski and the Northwest Territories’ Bob McLeod are part of the delegation.
Official Opposition NDP leader Thomas Mulcair, and Shawn Atleo, the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations were also part of the delegation.
In a statement released Saturday, Prime Minister Harper said: “One of the world’s most respected political and moral leaders, Nelson Mandela was a model of humility, grace, and forgiveness who dedicated his life to the relentless pursuit of equality, justice and freedom for the people of South Africa. His life and teachings touched Canadians deeply. His legend and legacy will undoubtedly inspire people from all walks of life for generations to come.”
