Potentially damaging Jackpine oilsands mine expansion gets go-ahead

Despite her view that it’s “likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects” Canada’s Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq has given the go-ahead to Shell Canada’s Jackpine oilsands mine expansion plan in the western prairie province of Alberta.

In a statement Friday (December 6), Minister Aglukkaq concluded that the effects from the 100,000-barrel-per-day expansion are “justified in the circumstances.”

The project would be located north of the community of Fort McMurray. The nearby Athabasca Chipewyan Indigenous First Nation has said the project will violate several federal laws covering fisheries and species at risk, as well as treaty rights.
