Railway failed to report accidents: safety board

Canada’s largest freight carrier, CN Rail did not declare more than 1,800 derailments and accidents to the Transportation Safety Board, reports the public broadcaster CBC. The board is an independent agency created by Parliament to advance transportation safety. Both the CBC and the Globe newspaper have produced in depth reports on fail safety since July, when a runaway train carrying oil exploded and wiped out downtown Lac Megantic in the province of Quebec and killed 47 people.

The unreported accidents came to light in 2005 when one of the board’s investigators noticed a dramatic difference in the number of accidents reported by CN compared to the number listed by other rail operators.

CN says the difference stemmed from a disagreement over the types of minor accidents that must be reported to the Transportation Safety Board.
