Canada pledges aid for Central African Republic

Canada will contribute $5 million to the international mission in the Central African Republic. 600 people have died in fighting between Christians and Muslims and more than a quarter of the population in the capital Bangui have fled their homes in fear.

Canadian funding will support a United Nations-mandated mission led by the African Union to protect civilians, stabilize the country, enable humanitarian assistance and support disarmament, demobilization and reintegration.

Canada’s has already contributed over $6.9 million to help meet humanitarian needs of those affected by the conflict, said a news release from Canada’s foreign affairs minister.

“Canada also welcomes the French military intervention in support of MISCA (the international mission),” says the news release. Notably absent is any notion of Canadian military support.
