Canada aims to double international students

Canada will try to double the number of international students coming to its universities. The goal is to “advance Canada’s commercial interests in priority markets around the world” and is part of Canada’s new foreign policy focus on economic priorities.

To attract foreign students, the government will shift diplomatic, visa-processing and marketing resources to China, Vietnam, India, Brazil, Mexico and the Middle East-North Africa region.

Foreign students spend $8 billion per year

Foreign students pay more than triple the average tuition fees paid by Canadians, and a 2012 study estimated they spend $8 billion a year on that and living expenses. If their numbers are doubled they could double the number of Canadian jobs sustained by international enrollments.

Canada competes fiercely for international students with countries like the U.S., Britain and Australia.
