Cycling event full in spite of frigid weather

Vélo-Québec’s first winter cycling event is fully reserved in spite of an unusually long run of frigid temperatures in Montreal. The group which promotes cycling in the province of Québec holds an annual summer event through the streets of Montreal, which last year attracted 26,000 cyclists.

The maximum 500 people have already registered for the new winter event scheduled for February 16.  Participants will ride on streets and bike paths, but no streets will be closed to traffic, as they are for the summer tour.

Cycling has become popular in Montreal but most people put their bikes away as soon as it gets cold or the snow flies. This year there are more people willing to brave the snow and sub-zero temperatures (Celsius). Vélo-Québec says a main bike path in the city is used by 600 cyclists per day (not me!) and the group is lobbying to have more paths cleared of snow.
