Ukraine will get $220 million Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister announced today. John Baird said the money is part of an international effort to restore economic stability to the country. This is in addition to $200 million for medical aid announced on Baird’s recent trip to Ukraine.
“Prime Minister Stephen Harper is announcing $220 million in additional measures to promote sustainable economic growth, democratic development, and good governance,” Baird said during a news conference today in Ottawa.
All eyes are on the country in advance of the Russian-imposed referendum on the fate of Ukraine’s Crimea region that is set for Sunday. John Baird has referred to the referendum as an “illegitimate stunt” and said Canada will not recognize Sunday’s referendum results.
Baird said, “We condemned and continue to condemn in the strongest of terms Russia’s provocative and illegal military occupation of Crimea.”
Ukrainian-Canadians make up one of Canada’s largest ethnic groups with a population of 1.2 million people.
