Cellphone services go up $5

Three big companies dominate wire services in Canada and they all have hiked their base prices for new plans by five dollars in most markets. Existing plans are unaffected.

Rogers, Telus and Bell Mobility now all charge $80 per month for new smartphone plans with a new contract. They include 500 MB of data, unlimited nation-wide calling, unlimited messaging, voice mail and call display.

That is five dollars more than what the same plans cost when they were introduced last year.  Other plans with more data cost upwards of $145.

The three companies came under fire by the Canadian government last year, which is pushing for a fourth wireless competitor in all four markets.
