Blue Jays hopes to rebound appear slim in 2014

What a difference a year makes. Certainly in baseball. Last year, fans in Toronto had high hopes for their major league baseball team. Trades had been made in the off-season and fans were giddy about the prospect of the Toronto Blue Jays return to the top of the baseball world as they were in 1992 and 1993 when they were World Series champions.

What happened was quite the opposite. The Blue Jays bombed. Struck by a series of injuries and a lot of sub-par performances, Toronto finished in last place in the 2013 American League East division race.

Hopes have been tempered this season. The general manager, Alex Anthopoulos, spent the off-season fending off criticism, promising changes and mostly standing pat, acquiring just one new major position player.

With less than two weeks to go before Opening Day, Toronto fans are mostly wandering around with their fingers crossed, hoping that somehow lightning will strike, pondering what the baseball gods might have in store for them and the team this season.

For some perspective on what happened last year and what might happen this year, Terry Haig spoke with Richard Griffin, the Toronto Star baseball columnist.
