Televised leaders’ debate highlights issues of Quebec provincial election

Listen

Half way through the election campaign in Canada’s predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, the leaders of the four major political parties took part in a live televised debate on Thursday (March 20).

The province’s Premier Pauline Marois, whose party the Parti Quebecois wants to take Quebec out of the Canadian confederation, is hoping to turn her minority government into a majority.

Philippe Couillard the new leader of the Quebec Liberal Party wants to bring his party back into power, after his predecessor, Jean Charest, lost to Marois a year and a half ago.

Former Parti Quebecois member, Francois Legault’s new Coalition Avenir Québec party is trying to negotiate a position between the two major parties.

And Francoise David’s Quebec Solidaire presents itself as left of the Parti Quebecois and for an inclusive separatism that recognizes the different origins of Quebecers.
