Canadian Members of Parliament questioned one former federal and two provincial chief electoral officers at a House of Commons standing committee looking into the federal government’s proposed Fair Elections Act (Bill C-23) on Tuesday (March 25).
The contrast between the questions was stark. As Conservative government MPs tried to elicit answers to support the government’s reforms, while opposition MPs focused on their contention the reforms would take away the right to vote to many Canadians, and loosen spending limits during elections.
On Tuesday, the main issue was vouching – vouching by a properly identified citizen, that another who lacked sufficient ID cards, could be vouched for, and allowed to vote.
