Protesters in 45 communities across Canada came out to protest what they call the end of the federal government’s involvement in health care. The protests Monday (March 31) come on the last day of the 10-year Canadian Health Accord which permitted a standardization of health care across Canada by the federal government along with Canada’s provinces and territories which are responsible for health care in their jurisdictions.
The federal government did not renegotiate a new accord. It will continue to transfer money to provinces, reducing the amounts in 2017, and not imposing any pan-Canadian standards for health care in the provinces and territories.
RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Michael McBane the National Coordinator of the citizens advocacy group the Canadian Health Coalition about the protests, and about the future of health care in Canada.
