Official Opposition: Canada should send peacekeepers to Central African Republic

Canada’s Official Opposition NDP party is calling on the Canadian government to send peacekeepers to the Central African Republic to prevent a genocide. The NDP’s foreign affairs critic, Paul Dewar, made the request in a press conference Wednesday (April 23).

“This will be a complicated conflict to deal with if we don’t do anything now,” said Dewar. He urged the government to respond to a United Nations call for peacekeeping assistance, saying such missions are part of Canada’s historic role on the world stage.

“This month, the international community is remembering our collective failure to prevent the Rwandan genocide. Let’s not repeat the same mistakes in the Central African Republic,” said Dewar. “Canada must be part of the effort to prevent another genocide in Africa.”

Last week, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon insisted the international community has an opportunity to help – and an obligation to act, “Not tomorrow – today.”
