Barbecue season starts, meat prices go up

After a particularly long and cold winter, Canadians are finally enjoying some warm weather and looking forward to the tradition of barbecuing meat on outdoor grills. Their enthusiasm however may be dampened by the soaring price of many cuts of meat.

Among the popular cuts, the price of a sirloin steak is up 12 per cent and pork chops are up 16 percent in the past year. A virus has ripped through pig farms in North America decimating the piglet population, and cattle herds are just recovering from years of culling. Demand is up, supply is down and so prices are rising.

The good news is that chicken remains a cheaper alternative.
