Two computer servers in Montreal were shut down as part of a major operation against an international cybercrime ring, reports the Globe and Mail newspaper.

Canadian police and authorities in nearly a dozen other countries participated in the U.S.-led crackdown on Russian ring which invaded up to a million computers around the world stealing banking credentials and extorting computer owners.
The malicious software used is called Gameover Zeus. U.S. court documents indicate Evgeniy Mikhaylovich Bogachev is accused of leading the ring and he is wanted by the FBI. He may be sailing in the Black Sea.
The Globe reports the Montreal servers were bought with the aim of using them specifically for a network of compromised computers that were controlled without the owners knowing it. Police used a section of the Criminal Code (law) on “mischief to data” to get the warrant used in their seizure.
