Tough anti-spam law worries businesses

Businesses across Canada are scrambling to prepare for tough new anti-spam legislation that will take effect on July 1st. The law will prevent businesses from sending commercial electronic messages through email, text or even social media and fines for disobeying will range from $1 million for individuals and $10 million for companies.

Even though it’s one of the toughest anti-spam laws in the world, some small businesses are not aware of it. Those which rely on electronic messages for marketing their products and services will have to change the way they do business.

Companies will be allowed to continue to send electronic messages where they have the recipient’s consent. But trying to sort out that consent can be a complicated and costly process which smaller firms may not be able to afford.
