Hundreds protest municipal pension reforms in province of Quebec

Municipal workers in the city of Montreal and other municipalities in the province of Quebec walked out en masse at 2PM  for 15 minutesTuesday (June 17) to protest against the Quebec government‘s proposed legislation aimed at reforming municipal pension plans to control deficits.

Presented by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy Pierre Moreau, Bill 3: An Act to foster the financial health and sustainability of municipal defined benefit pension plans “provides that municipal defined benefit pension plans must be restructured with a view to improving their financial health and ensuring their sustainability.”

Unionized employees disagree with the government.

In a surprise move last Thursday, 80 Montreal firefighters decided to take early retirement all at once in protest over the bill.
