Top Canadians advance at Wimbledon

Milos Raonic, the eighth seed in the gentlemen’s singles, on Thursday reached the third round of the prestigious tournament for the first time in his career. Raonic defeated American Jack Sock 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 with 13 aces, 39 winners and three breaks of serve in a 90-minute match.

“It came down to putting up a solid level of concentration to win in three sets,” said Raonic. “If you slip up on grass concentration it can hurt a lot.

“I’ve improved a lot on grass since I first played here and my confidence on the surface is higher. I don’t think about my movement, I can concentrate on how I want to play.”

Eugenie Bouchard, the 13th women’s seed, defeated Spain’s Silvia Solar-Espinosa in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Solar-Espinosa is currently ranked 75 in the world.

Bouchard is the only woman on the tour who made it to the semi-finals of the first two 2014 Grand Slams, the Australian Open and the French Open.

Compatriot Frank Dancevic did not fare as well, failing to make it to the third round. Dancevic, the world’s number 107, played through hip pain but lost 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to 63rd ranked Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan.

Dancevic, who made it into the main draw as a “lucky loser,” defeated the 29th seed, Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, in straight sets in the first round.
