When Canadian couples have a traditional wedding they usually hire a professional photographer to take pictures, but they don’t usually have a tornado in the background of the shots.
Photographer Colleen Niska was snapping photos of a pair of newlyweds in the western prairie province of Saskatchewan when the bride saw the funnel cloud off in the distance. “We weren’t really that scared,” she said. “We had a vehicle…we were so far away, we had time to get away.” So they kept on with the shoot.
Niska later posted a gallery of images which, as of Monday morning, was shared more than 12,000 times by Facebook users, accumulating nearly 17,000 likes and almost 1,000 comments. The photos were picked up by media outlets across North America and e-mails have come in from various U.S. television stations.
And no, none of the images were Photoshopped, says Niska.
