Canada’s foreign affairs minister has unleashed more criticism of the United Nations. John Baird said Wednesday the United Nations Human Rights Council is singling out Israel and failing to mention Hamas in resolution on the conflict in Gaza.
His comments came after the Council voted 29-1 to authorize an international commission of inquiry to investigate all alleged abuses since mid-June in the Gaza Strip. Canada is not a member of the Council.
The United States was the only vote in oppositio.
Mr. Baird has frequently criticised the world body for its stances on the Middle East and Syria.
Wednesday’s comments came as Amnesty International sent him an open letter, urging him to denounce Israel too for the violence in the Middle East.
Mr. Baird said the Council is turning “a blind eye to the facts on the ground.”
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party government has consistently maintained vigourous pro-Israel stance.
