Canadian government asking public servants to delete emails

The Canadian government is telling its employees to delete emails with no “business value” according to a report by Mike De Souza of the Toronto Star newspaper. Recent government department memos are based on a new policy from the Treasury Board of Canada that came into effect in January.

De Souza reports “Employees must still preserve information as required by law, a government spokeswoman says, but instructions obtained by the Star show that employees were being told to delete some reference materials related to their work, including memos and copies of departmental documents.”

According to the report, the Official Opposition NDP’s information critic, Charlie Angus warned the new instructions might erase evidence of political interference or mistakes by managers prior to decisions on federal policies.
