Jury selection begins in Magnotta trial

A judge addressed a roomful of about 400 potential jurors, some of whom will be chosen to decide whether Luca Magnotta is guilty of the grisly murder of Montreal student Jun Lin in 2012.

Magnotta faces charges of first-degree murder, committing an indignity to a human body, publication and mailing obscene matter and criminal harassment of the prime minister and members of parliament.

The judge will search for 14 jurors—12 who will sit on the jury and two alternates. One lawyer says it will be a challenge to find people who have not heard about the case and are impartial.

‘Shocking videos’ to be presented

The case has received international coverage and journalists have arrived from around the world to cover the trial.

The judge has said there will be shocking video images presented but none of the actual murder.

The trail begins September 22 and is expected to last between six and eight weeks.
