Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper will address the United Nations General Assembly later this month, for only the third time since he took office in 2006. The prime minister has been accused of shunning the UN over his years in office, and critics say that has weakened Canada’s position internationally.
Harper will address the Ukraine crisis and the radical Islamist offensive in Iraq and Syria in his speech. He will also attend an event focussing on maternal and child health in the developing world. Canada hosted a summit on the issue earlier this year and the prime minister promises to advocate to keep it on the UN’s agenda.
Although Harper will attend a dinner focused on climate change, he will skip a summit on the subject taking place just before the assembly opens. Environmentalists could be dismayed, but not surprised.
