Man who stabbed his children freed on bail

A former doctor who admitted to stabbing his two children to death has been granted bail pending a new trial. It’s an ongoing story that has grabbed headlines across the province of Quebec since the deaths in 2009.

In the first trial, Guy Turcotte was found not criminally responsible for the deaths of his son and daughter, aged five and three, because of a mental health disorder. He has spent 18 months getting treatment in a psychiatric hospital in Montreal.

Turcotte had been freed but was rearrested last year after a Court of Appeal overturned the verdict and a new trial was ordered. Guy Turcotte asked to be released so he could take care of his family and the court agreed.

The children’s uncle was reportedly furious and stormed out of the court house. Their mother was absent and said she would not comment on the decision.
