Sudden discovery of Métis rebel great-great-grandfather, behind Matt Dorgan music video

Growing up in his family Matt Dorgan was told not to think of himself as Métis, and emphasize his Scottish, Europpean heritage. Not until he started reseaching his genealogical roots did he discover a number of Métis family members on his mother’s side, and that his great-great-grandfather Isidore had fought alongside the Canadian Métis rebel hero Louis Riel in the Battle of Batoche in 1885.

This new realization of the importance of his Indigenous and Metis past pushed the musician and DJ to produce the music video Battle of Batoche and to highlight some of the thoughts of Louis Riel, a hero to some, but hung for treason by the government of Canada for defending the rights of the Métis people.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Matt Dorgan last week, days after he had released his video on Monday, September 22.
