Canada’s combat mission in Iraq, and the fight against homegrown terrorism

The Canadian government used its majority in the House of Commons Tuesday night (October 7) to vote for a six-month combat mission of air strikes against ISIS targets, and the use of Canadian military advisors in a non-combat role in Iraq.

Almost all opposition MPs voted against the motion, concerned about the lack of details and framework for the mission, as well as the mission’s effectiveness in fighting terrorism.

The next day the opposition asked for more details about the mission. Meanwhile the Public Safety Minister Stephen Blaney announced the government is commisioning studies on homegrown terrorism and terrorist financing.
