Canadian rock icon Neil Young: Pipelines ‘scabs on people’s lives’

Canadian rock music singer-songwriter Neil Young says Canadians need to stand up for clean air, land and water by taking on big oil companies in particular. And he calls issues involving oil pipelines “scabs on our lives.”

“I see the world the way I see it. I’m going to do what I think should be done because people are watching me. Then they’ll say, ‘Why’s he doing that? Doesn’t he care about selling records?’ No, I don’t.”

Young expresses his views in his latest protest song “Who’s Going to Stand Up?” with calls to “ban fossil fuel and draw the line before we build one more pipeline.”

The 68-year-old rock icon was in Vancouver for the last concert of the national Blue Dot Tour, which was fronted by Canadian scientist and environmental activist David Suzuki.

Two controversial oil pipeline projects have been prominent in Canada. One the Keystone XL pipeline from the Canadian province of Alberta to the U.S. state of Texas. The other is the Northern Gateway pipeline that would transport Alberta oilsands crude to the Pacific coast province of British Columbia.
