Independent Canadian Member of Parliament Maria Mourani signed a NDP membership card Wednesday morning (November 19) and says she is considering running for the Official Opposition NDP in the next election.
Mourani was formerly with the Bloc Quebecois party, which promotes the independence of the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, and was first elected in 2006 in the Montreal riding of Ahunstic. She was expelled from the party in September 2013 over her criticism of the Charter of Values presented by the Parti Quebecois government in Quebec.
Mourani has been sitting as an independent since being expelled.
Despite signing an NDP membership card, Mourani says she will have discussions with party officials in her electoral riding before declaring her candidature in the next federal election which is scheduled for October, 2015..
