The armed group ISIS has released a video of a Canadian, radicalised convert urging fellow Muslims to carry out attacks in Canada. John Maguire was part of a circle of people from Ottawa who have either left Canada to fight or who have social media profiles featuring ISIS propaganda, reports the public broadcaster, CBC.
In his video, Maguire lauds a fellow fighter who ran over two Canadian soldiers in October, killing one of them. He also references a gunman’s murder of a solder at the main Canadian war memorial before he stormed Parliament.
He calls Canada “evil.” The Canadian government has sent fighter jets and support personnel along with other countries conducting air strikes against ISIS militants in northern Iraq.
‘Remain vigilant’
Canada’s public safety minister has responded to the video saying “Canadians must remain vigilant.”
Canadian intelligence officials estimate 130 other Canadians have joined the conflicts in either Syria or Iraq. Not all of them are fighting on the side of ISIS.
Maguire had apparently been under surveillance after leaving for Syria.
