A Canadian frigate left Halifax on Tuesday bound for the Mediterranean Sea to a NATO maritime force aimed at reassuring eastern European allies worried about the crisis in the Ukraine.
HMCS Fredericton is the first Canadian frigate that’s received upgrades through a $4.3-billion modernization program to participate in the NATO operation.
The upgrades include a new combat management system, refurbished radar systems, upgraded communications and a more recent generation of missiles.
It carries a crew of about 250 people and a CH-124 Sea King helicopter and air attachment on board.
Fredericton replaces a sister ship, the HMCS Toronto, which has been in the region since August.
Fredericton is expected to deploy for a similar six-month period after the ships meet up in Spain.
