Bank sues former employees for stolen money

One of Canada’s major banks is suing two former employees for allegedly conspiring to steal more than $200,000.  Jeffrey Ho Nam Lau and Maradona Hoang Vu of the west coast city of Vancouver are said to have outsmarted a security system at the Royal Bank of Canada.

The system is supposed to ensure that no single employee has the combinations of two locks needed to open a vault containing large amounts of cash. Each man is said to have had one combination and to have pooled the information. They are also accused of making a copy of a treasury timer key.

A third man is also named in the suit. The bank alleges Hau Ngoc Nguyen conspired with the other two to steal $62,500 in December 2013 and more than $140,000 in January 2014.

Vu and Lau have been arrested and fired by the bank. It is suing for the value of the stolen money. No criminal charges have been laid.
